Delight = Success?

31 Days on (1)

You will obey the Lord again. You will obey all his commands that I’m giving you today. Then the Lord your God will give you great success in everything you do. You will have many children. Your livestock will have many little ones. Your crops will do very well. The Lord will take delight in you again. He’ll give you success. That’s what he did for your people of long ago.  But you must obey the Lord your God. You must keep his commands and rules. They are written in this Book of the Law. You must turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Deut 30:8-10 NIrV

You will obey the Lord again

Three phrases jump out at me in this passage, and the order seems significant. First, you will obey the Lord again. At some point, disobedience took over.

God will give you great success

Once obedience begins it is followed by God’s response of giving success. An action is followed by a blessing.

The Lord will take delight in your again

Continued obedience is where delight seems to come in. After obedience, after the blessing, delight enters.

As this passage continues we are reminded alongside the Israelites that those who have come before us have experienced the same pattern with God, and each time he has responded to them as well. God’s character is consistent. The pattern remains true.

God’s delight is a response to man’s obedience.

I’m participating in Write 31 Days this month. I’ll be writing on Delight. Join me here each day in the month of October for a short reflection on something I’m learning about what God is delighted by, and how delight connects us to him.
