Your hands made me and formed me; give me understanding to learn your commands.
74 May those who fear you rejoice when they see me for I have put my hope in your word.
75 I know, Lord, that your laws are righteous,
    and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me.
76 May your unfailing love be my comfort,
    according to your promise to your servant.
77 Let your compassion come to me that I may live,
    for your law is my delight.
78 May the arrogant be put to shame for wronging me without cause;
    but I will meditate on your precepts.
79 May those who fear you turn to me, those who understand your statutes.
80 May I wholeheartedly follow your decrees, that I may not be put to shame.

Psalm 119:73-80

For Your Law is My Delight

The Psalmist understands God’s laws are for protection, not to limit us. He begins by acknowledging God as creator and then says he has put hope in God’s word.

We’ve already explored that God delights in the humble and the obedient. This Psalm shows a reciprocation of delight for those who obey God.

Surrender = Delight

Life isn’t always easy. In many ways, it might be more accurate to say life always includes an element of “hard.” The day to day includes so many decisions. So many encounters of heartbreak and frustration as those who call themselves leaders or friends fail us again.

And yet, through all of the hard and sad delight is still possible because God is bigger than the law. God IS the law. When we align our choices with our creator we can do more than hope in God’s word. We can “wholeheartedly follow your decrees, that I may not be put to shame.”
