He brought me out into a spacious place;
he rescued me because he delighted in me.
The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.
For I have kept the ways of the Lord; Psalm 18:19-21 (NIV)
David understood God’s delight. He trusted that all good things come because of God. Even when David’s life was in danger, he knew God had his back. How is this possible? How is it that in the hardest times David could identify God’s delight?
An exploration of the life of a shepherd holds the answers to these questions. A shepherd lived mostly solitary existence. Out in the pastures with the sheep, the shepherd was his flock’s only protection against danger. Animals who would attempt to feast on sheep would likely also attack David if needed.
Hours of silence with only the sounds of animals allowed David to see and uniquely hear God. He created worship music and prayed to God revealing his heart.
God knew David’s heart regardless, but David sought a relationship with God by bearing his heart, and in those times delight was present.
